Lumosity Wins Competitive Grant
Posted on April 1, 2011
Lumosity was recently selected for a highly competitive Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant to study the efficacy of the Brain Trainer iPhone app for enhancing cognition and brain function. The award will present Lumosity with the opportunity to work collaboratively with Dr. Adam Gazzaley and his laboratory to measure the effects of training with Lumosity’s mobile app on brain activity. Dr. Gazzaley is Director of the Neuroscience Imaging Center at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and will be scanning participants before and after training using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) — a technique that assesses brain function by measuring blood flow and metabolism.
Previous studies of training with Lumosity.com have shown a range of benefits that include enhancements in cognitive function and frontal lobe activity in childhood survivors of cancer; enhancement in visual attention in older adults with mild cognitive impairment; and enhancements in attention, memory and speed of processing in healthy, middle aged adults. This new study represents an exciting opportunity to measure the benefits of cognitive enhancement with the Brain Trainer iPhone app using the very latest, cutting-edge brain imaging techniques, partnering with one of the leaders worldwide in this field of research. This research will be supported by the SBIR program at the Office of Naval Research, which seeks to spur small business innovation through research.
This is just another example of the serious science going into Lumosity. We use everything we learn in our cutting-edge research program to make the most effective and efficient cognitive training possible.
